Cerebral Institute of Discovery - Neuropharmacology

Interest in neuropharmacology is growing at an exponential rate as more and more drugs which affect our feelings, emotions, and even the way we think, hit the marketplace. The recent wave of anti-depressant medications is just one example of the results of this science of drugs and their interaction with the central nervous system (CNS). Much of neuropharmacology is based in affecting neurotransmitters (http://www.cerebral.org/neurotrans.html).
Several of the resources below contain information on psychedelic or psychoactive drugs. The Cerebral Institute of Discovery neither condones nor condemns use of such substances, but recognizes that studies of the affects of these drugs can open many new doors to research with beneficial results for much of humankind.

WWW Resources

Search Medline (http://www.healthgate.com/HealthGate/MEDLINE/search.shtml) for information and medical research.

Drugs Index
http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/drugs_index/
WholeHealthMD.com provides an extensive list of current prescription drugs on the market today. The list has links to pages for each drug, which list why it is prescribed, how it works, duration, storage and warnings about use. Excellent resource

Pharmeceutical Information Network
http://pharminfo.com/
Drug databases, FAQs, and discussion groups. Searchable.

WWW Virtual Library: Biotechnology
http://www.cato.com/biotech/
Links to research sites, pharmaceutical development, and ongoing clinical trials. Not to mention genetic engineering and medical device development.

Medication Information
http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Villa/2157/medicat.htm
This is a list of medicines commonly prescribed for symptoms associated with cerebral palsy, seizures, reflux, and other conditions. It is only one page of a wonderful site run by the mother of a girl with hyrdranencephaly, a rare condition, often initially diagnosed as CP, where the cerebral hemispheres are [partially] missing and replaced with sacs filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

MAPS
http://www.maps.org/
MAPS - Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies - is a foundation supporting researchers and scientists studying the healing and spiritual potentials for psychedelic drugs. Their overall position is advocacy, although they remain scientifically objective. MAPS is probably the most active of any scientifically-based psychoactive studies organizations. They maintain a moderated mailing list and publish a bulletin 2 to 4 times a year. MAPS provides grant money for research world-wide. They are well organized and their information is up to date. They also run a well-moderated mailing list (http://www.maps.org/foruminfo.html ) with archives (http://www.cerebral.org/Maps/maillist.html).

Erowid
http://www.erowid.org/
Erowid is a small not-for-profit organization dedicated to studying and providing information about humanity's never-ending search for meaning and spirit. They recognize that every individual is on their own path and that no single path is best, or even functional, for all. While they delve into a number of spiritual practices, their main area of concentration is spreading accurate information regarding the careful use of entheogens, entactogens, and psychedelics. The site is huge and greatly respected.

The Heffter Research Institute
http://www.heffter.org/
HRI takes the most objective stance on psychedelic substances of any organization we've found. The institute was founded in 1993 and has a very impressive advisory panel. The goal of the institute is "to contribute to a greater understanding of the mind, leading to an improvement of the human condition, and the alleviation of suffering." You'll find their complete mission statement and all sorts of details about the organization, a summary of their work to date (only thru 1998), and information on how to join or order their publication (only 1 issue) on the site. While The Heffter Institute has admirable goals, it seems they are at best loosely organized.

The Lycaeum
http://www.lycaeum.org/
"The world's largest entheogenic library and community." A collection of information and resourses regarding psychoactive substances. The Lycaeum is HUGE and rather unwieldy, but contains loads of valuable information if you can find it. One of the more valuable resources within this site is its bulletin board system for a wide variety of topics under the psychoactive realm (art, chemistry, plants, etc.). The Lycaeum is high profile and is certainly watched by the DEA for illegal activity. While few would argue that conducting truly illegal business such as sales of controlled substances should be OK, discussion and information sharing should never be restricted.

ProMind Books
http://www.promind.com/
Promind has the most complete collection of books dealing with psychoactive plants, from scientific texts to artful prose, of any bookstore in the world. The site can be a bit difficult to navigate, but their catalog is free, very well organized, and a pleasure to peruse.
