Cerebral Institute of Discovery - Neuro-Disability Resources

The myriad of disability resources on the net can be daunting, if not exasperating. Many search results lead nowhere or to useless or unrelated information. After years of searching, we have gathered the following list of useful resources for neuro-related disabilities. These are the sites we use most often and have yeilded the most information. There are other useful sites out there; if you know of a site that is particularly useful to you, please let us know.

Trace Research & Development Center

The Trace Center is an interdisciplinary R&D and resource center on technology and disability. It works "with consumers and the information and telecommunication industries to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to new information technologies and the emerging information superhighway."

Our-Kids is one of the more popular mailing lists for parents of children with disabilities, all kinds of disabilities. It has grown tremendously over the years and now hosts a web site with pictures of the kids and other information.

Disability resources for children and adults with disabilities and their families, educators, and professionals. Offers information on assistive technology, early intervention, inclusion, supportive employment, and legislation, among other things.

Family Village

A global community that integrates information, resources, and communication opportunities on the Internet for people with disabilities, for their families, and for those that provide them services and support. Includes informational resources on specific diagnoses, communication connections, adaptive products and technology, adaptive recreational activities, education, worship, health issues, and disability-related media and literature. They also have a nice interface.

A multimedia tutorial of types of CP, complications associated with it, therapies, and special equipment. Solid, basic information.

The Parkinson's Institute

The Parkinson's Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organization conducting patient care and research activities in the neurological specialty area of movement disorders.

Dyslexia: The Gift

This site explores the positive talents that give rise to dyslexia, and provides information about the best ways for dyslexic people to learn. It has information and articles about dyslexia, an interactive forum, a bookstore, a resource directory, and information for parents and teachers.

MSWorld offers a live MS chat forum, member e-mail exchange service, multiple sclerosis library resources, technical support, on-line MS web magazine, message boards for those with MS and their families and friends.

Special Child: For Parent of Children with Disabilities

A tremendous site with information on all sorts of childhood disabilities. While it takes a somewhat commercial approach, it contains a wealth of information.
