SUMMARY

I offer 17 years of mission-critical systems architecture and implementation with 20 years of daily Solaris exposure. I have taken a lead role in every position held, including management of multi-million dollar international projects in the telecommunications and utility industries with extensive design of corporate networks. I have worked over a decade with C, Perl, and SQL to create effective and useful software for research, commerce, and control systems.

STATUS

Open to discussing any challenging possibility which will allow me to sufficiently provide for my family.

EXPERIENCE

Manager of Systems Engineering, Multistate Associates, Inc., Alexandria, VA

9/2002 to present

Authored and executed business proposals entailing 3-5 year plans. Personally specified and installed $100,000 corporate data center in Atlanta. Co-designed, implemented, and managed a highly configurable data acquisition system in Perl and MySQL to gather and standardize nearly a half million legislative documents each and every day. Established procedures for efficient and cost-effective operations. Designed massively parallel, multi-threaded search engine based on Lexis-Nexis syntax, including proximity operators and special functions. Reported directly to company Partners, including formal annual presentations.

Primary tools: Solaris, Perl, C, PHP, Apache, MySQL, Debian, Postfix

Director of Engineering, Governet Affairs, Inc., Atlanta, GA

7/1999 to 6/2002

Developed and managed data mining controller in C and SQL which retrieved, parsed, and notified clients of any changes in over a quarter million legislative documents each day. Dynamic web page development using a suite of tools from Thunderstone (web crawler, SQL database, and interpreted HTML language). Supervision of Apache web servers with SSL/PHP/Perl support handling an average of 250,000 requests per day. Specified and installed high-bandwidth web servers and development network for tracking and searching nearly one million pieces of US state and federal legislation in real-time. Reported directly to President and VP of Engineering.

Primary tools: Solaris, Apache, Sendmail, Perl, C, Texis, Vortex, Oracle

Systems Architect, Atlanta, GA; Knoxville, TN

3/1999 to 12/2002

Developed all aspects of Unix-based VPNs, internet services, and web sites, from conception to full service. Network services administration includes Sendmail (SMTP, POP, IMAP, and LDAP), anonymous FTP, encryption (SSH, IPSEC, SKIP, PGP) and general security (intrusion detection, firewall rules, etc.), database maintenance and backup procedures. Web services include search engine placement, ecommerce, database integration, subscription services, maintenance, promotion, and security.

Primary tools: Solaris, Apache, Sendmail, Perl, SSH, MySQL, Oracle, Javascript

Software Development Manager, Celerity Systems, Inc., Knoxville, TN

7/1995 to 6/1999

Managed all software development involving the coordinated effort of multiple teams of 3-5 people. Initiated Configuration Management and Software Development Plans based on IEEE standards. Mentored junior engineers. Development projects overseen included server control software over TCP/IP, settop device drivers and applications, and engineering environment infrastructure. Managed development facets from requirements to production units. Servers and settops delivered and decoded MPEG2 transport stream over ATM on OC3. Served as supervisor of all systems administration. Published simple open source alarm system library with API. Initiated source code control and release procedures. Negotiated system integration issues with partner companies and clients. Spent a total of 5 months in South Korea managing a 6-city/1500-subscriber deployment of a digital video on demand (MPEG2 transport and system stream) system over Ethernet, T1, and ADSL. Reported directly to President and VP of Engineering; semi-annual reports to board of directors.

Primary tools: Solaris, C, TCP/IP, AWT, Perl

Senior Software Engineer, Environmental Systems Corporation, Knoxville, TN

7/1990 to 7/1995

Designed and coded air monitoring data acquisition systems. Work involved Unix and PC networking over TCP/IP (early days), serial communication, and real-time event handling. Extensive work with the X Windows Toolkit and Motif.

EDUCATION

BS, Computer Science, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN; May 1990

CS GPA 3.6; concentration in software and systems engineering.
